TMN Family Meal TimeThe Family Meal Time series focuses on bringing healthy meal ideas for families of all sizes and ages. The Moms’ Network and local businesses are teaming up to bring a fresh perspective to meal planning, eating and cooking together as a family, and healthy eating.

Join us as we visit commercial kitchens, speak with professional chefs, get hands on instructions, learn tricks of the trade, and much more. This is a free event for all community members and some events will include free babysitting. View the list of events below.

Benefits of the Family Meal Time

Many parents may ask why we focus on family meal times spent together. In a TIME magazine article entitled “The Magic of the Family Meal” Robin Fox, an anthropologist who teaches at Rutgers University in New Jersey, writes about the mysterious way that family dinner engraves our souls.  She writes,”If it were just about food, we would squirt it into their mouths with a tube. A meal is about civilizing children. It’s about teaching them to be a member of their culture.” And beyond that, the benefits are amazing, especially for parents of teens. The research indicates that “the more often families eat together, the less likely kids are to

  • smoke,
  • drink,
  • do drugs,
  • get depressed,
  • develop eating disorders and
  • consider suicide,

and the more likely they are to

  • do well in school,
  • delay having sex,
  • eat their vegetables,
  • learn big words and
  • know which fork to use.”

So pull up a few chairs, grab some delicious food, and have a nice conversation with your children. And if everyone can’t make it for dinner, then try breakfast; the benefits are the same.
